Why does a patient end up with a permanent catheter? The most frequent cause is acute or chronic urinary retention. The prostate has grown so much that it completely compresses the urethra.

You cannot urinate. If it is acute retention, you go to A&E, they put in a catheter and that is where the ordeal begins. They tell you to try removing it in a few days with medication.

The medication does not work, they put it back in and in the end you finish with a catheter that is changed every month or for months, sometimes for years. And this affects the quality of life in a brutal way.
